Transforming Grids into Business Tools
"The next two years of funding will determine a lot of the outcome of grids. More innovation tends to occur outside the established big vendors, and small vendors could get funded and push grid adoption internally at their large enterprise customers. Hopefully the result will be serious grid investment and innovation. "

FilmLoop - FilmLoop, Inc.
FilmLoop is free software that gives you the power to create new loops or join existing ones. Loops are strings of images that move across your desktop. They can tell stories, showcase products, communicate ideas, and link to websites. A loop can contain photos of your family's latest vacation, images of the latest happenings around the world, or pictures that link to the latest properties in your local real estate market. And, changes to a loop automatically update on the desktops of everyone in your loop, whether it's two, ten, or a million people.
[Website]
Pretty cool tool. Business model is still a bit unclear after listening to their DEMO presentation. If they are selling the filmloop technology (such as w/ Purina.com), the assumption is that asp's will be rather low as this is simply a feature. The founders mention a key strategic partnership with Photoblog - 12m unique visitors a month - whereby they insert a loop button into the pages. Not sure how the company will monetize this relationship and grow the revenues to a sustainable business with more than $10M+ revenues. The better use for the technology is to leverage the community and social networking aspect of the site (a la flickr, webshots, ofoto, myspace). And, another creative model would be to insert ads into the loops or to use the technology as an ad medium of some sort. That would create further value to the company and allow it to be an acquisition target to, say, a Google (more for the technology feature, less for the ads), Yhoo, Newscorp.
****According to "hiten", the partnership is with Photobucket.com, not photoblog.com. Apologies for the confusion.

MLSN Sports Picks - Digital Chocolate, Inc.

Demo Says:
A year ago, Digital Chocolate founder Trip Hawkins described the mobile phone as a social computer. Today, he returns to this conference to introduce a set of games that delivers on that prediction. These applications are social experiences that create a connection among members of special interest communities, and transform the way we think about multi-player games.
We Say:
Don't underestimate Trip Hawkins, the guy that built EA, 3DO, and a host of other companies.
That said, with only $21.4M raised from tier 1 vc's KP and Sequoia, Digital Chocolate faces stiff competition from Jamdat, Glu Mobile (formerly Sorrent), mForma, and others. It will be interesting to see what second generation mobile apps - MLSN Sports Picks, gambling, dating, social networking, p2p, etc - the company will launch. We're sick of Jamdat bowling and Blue Lava/Jamdat tetris.

The Real Reasons You're Working So Hard... - Yahoo! News
"Honk if this sounds like you: While much of America is watching Jon Stewart, Letterman, or Leno, you're stumbling out the office door into a car-service Town Car or groping for the clicker to the BMW in the company parking lot. Once home, you slug down a beer or the last of a bottle of white wine on the door of the fridge, stuff some leftovers in your mouth, and collapse into bed beside your sleeping spouse. A half-dozen hours later, you crawl to the shower, throw on a clean shirt, pour some coffee down your throat, maybe drop a kid or two at school, and jump back on the frenetic work treadmill that you can't shut off. Google Talk's potential searchable conversations
I was thinking the other day that one of the things you can do with VoIP is to record it, using shareware like SoundStudio to record them to your hard drive (look at all of the podcasting interviews being done over Skype). Once it’s on the hard drive, you could then run speech recognition against the file and create an index that can be searched by, yup, you’ve got it, Google Desktop Search.

Ikanos launches public offering - Yahoo! News
The company raised $69 million in its initial public offering of stock, which was somewhat well received on Wall Street in spite of a slow market for new tech offerings. Ikanos shares started trading at $12 a share and rose as high as $14.25 during the day, but fell back to $13 by the close of trading.
Now the competition is heating up for a second version of the chip, dubbed VDSL2, which can transfer data at high speeds over longer distances than VDSL1 chips. Chip makers such as Germany's Infineon, Texas Instruments, Conexant Systems and Broadcom plan to challenge Ikanos, as do smaller players such as Metalink and Centillium Communications. Japan, Germany and France are in the adoption stage now. But the VDSL chip makers have to wait for the phone companies to mobilize in the United States.
``We are seeing the interest growing in all markets worldwide,'' said Imran Hajimusa, senior director of marketing at Infineon in San Jose. ``But overall, it's a tough market because there are a lot of competitors.''

That appears to be the daily mantra of more Sandhill Road VCs after a careful reading of their tea leaves.

MercuryNews.com | 09/21/2005 | Google WiFi hints are on Web
Outsiders have been speculating about Google's WiFi plans in earnest lately, especially after the publication of a Business 2.0 magazine story in August that suggested that Google wants to build a massive broadband network.
The story was based on Google's relationship with the Union Square hotspot and the fact that Google has been buying up massive amounts of unused fiber-optic cable, once used by telecommunications companies that collapsed.
Others believe that Google intends to use its network to deliver video content to its users.
Jupiter Research analyst Julie Ask said Google's involvement in WiFi would make sense. WiFi providers can determine the location of their users to within about 300 feet, offering many opportunities to customize the type of content users see based on their geography.
``The potential for local search and local advertising comes into play,'' Ask said.

Google - bankers making pitches
1. Google's offering a hit, bankers make their pitches
Google seems to have won over fund managers. They have piled into the stock, but to at least one pundit, all this recalls the bubble days. The big question for fund managers and investors is whether there is any upside left. Meanwhile, bankers are keenly aware that Google has built a $7 billion cash war chest. While still way out of Microsoft's league, the word seems to be out that the company is entertaining more acquisition ideas. There's something of a frenzy as bankers line up with their pitches.

Seagate Buys Mirra - Terms Undisclosed
Seagate has purchased Mirra Wednesday afternoon, adding storage appliance technology for the home and small office.
Peter Radsliff, VP Marketing had commented on our blog earlier in the year that the company was doing well. Mirra raised a total of $11M from Seqouia, Ventures Strategy Partners, Camp Ventures, and others. Company had good distribution channels (Amazon, Besbuy, dell, newegg, etc) and an importantpatent (Peer to Peer Remote Data Storage and Collaboration). Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital all trade at roughly a 0.5x - 1x this and next year's revenue multiple so the Mirra acquisition would probably be in that range or slightly higher. Mirra has found a nice home considering the highly competitive space it plays in against the likes of Maxtor, D-Link, Xformx, and PrismIQ, who all offer a similar type of solution.
According to ExtremeTech, "Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but were not materially significant. Mirra's 34 employees will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Seagate, effective immediately. "

eBay to buy Skype for $2.6 billion in cash, stock | CNET News.com
Skype expects to generate $60 million in revenue this year and more than $200 million during 2006, Skype's chief operating officer, Michael Jackson, said in a joint interview with Dutta. The company has yet to post a profit, he said, adding that business users account for 25 percent of Skype's audience.
As of October 2004, Skype had raised $24 million from several private equity firms including Mangrove Capital Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Bessemer Venture Partners and Index Ventures.
While allowing potential benefits from providing communications services between buyers and sellers, particularly in China, Goldman Sachs analyst Anthony Noto said in a note to clients Friday that a licensing partnership could accomplish this without requiring eBay to buy Skype.
"We struggle to see enough of a benefit to the marketplace from offering this service to get a sufficient return on a potential multibillion-dollar price tag," Noto wrote.

Investors get behind podcasting, but will the listeners? - The Boston Globe
The entrepreneurs at PodShow and Odeo harbor big dreams for podcasting.
''Our mission is to bring as many people into podcasting as possible," says PodShow chief executive Ron Bloom. ''We think it has to be 100 million for the medium to take hold" -- that is, to sell advertising and sponsorships. (By comparison, commercial radio stations reach about 200 million listeners.)
The money and guidance that Odeo and PodShow will receive from their venture capital backers seem destined to turn them into the leading lights of podcasting, along with Apple's iTunes Music Store, which in June began distributing podcasts for free. (Another company to watch is publicly held Audible Inc., of New Jersey.)

DCM, Others Bet Big on Chinese Micropayment Startups
In China, credit cards and personal checks have always been more of an abstract idea than a reality.
The region also boasts that some 100 million people go online daily, sometimes to shop.
Such factors go a long way in explaining why, in succession over the last couple of weeks, two China-based online payment services have received funding from U.S. and Chinese investors and why more competitors are sure to emerge to take part in backing micropayments.
