acebook recently launched its own foray into the location business. But will Facebook Places kill or nurture the location-based startups such as Foursquare and Gowalla?
Facebook Places is the social network’s attempt to climb on the location-based services market which has been steadily growing over the past year or so. Startups such as Foursquare and Gowalla have managed to make a name for themselves, at least among the tech community. But Facebook Places ups the ante substantially.
The simple premise of Facebook Places is to allow Facebook’s 500 million-strong userbase to register where they are and make comments on that locale. So, as an example, if they’re at a restaurant they can tell others what they ate, damn the waiter, complain about the bill or whatever.
Facebook Places could do one of two things: kill off the smaller startups purely by presence, or bring location-based services into the mainstream in a big way, thereby giving the lesser-known (relative to Facebook) startups a huge boost.acebook recently launched its own foray into the location business.
