Symbol, Microsoft Team Up On RFID

"On Monday, Symbol Technologies (nyse: SBL - news - people ), will unveil the first radio-frequency identification reader that supports Microsoft's (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Windows CE. The move should reassert Symbol's market dominance in RFID and give Microsoft a foothold in the small but growing market."

The RFID market is small but growing. Sales of RFID equipment and services are expected to reach $7 billion in 2008, up from $1.5 billion in 2004, according to an April report by research firm IDTechEx. Analysts expect the biggest boom between 2006 and 2009, anticipating a drop in prices from $1 per tag to as low as 10 cents by 2008.
