MetaCarta

"MetaCarta is the pioneer in geographic information retrieval systems.

The company was founded by a team of MIT researchers in 1999 to bridge the gap between text search and GIS (Geographic Information Systems). MetaCarta Geographic Text Search (GTS) systems index large collections of structured and unstructured documents, finding references to places even if they are expressed in natural language. MetaCarta then enables searches for all the documents that refer to a particular place, a capability that in many circumstances is astonishingly useful."

Seems to be a bit of search, GPS/LBS, EII s/w all rolled into one, And they target the energy sector. MetaCarta is part of the Red Herring 100 and backed by Sevin Rosen, ChevronTexaco, Chisholm Private Capital among others. Most likely will be raising a few more rounds of financing in the future.
