Peter Thiel is a technology entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist.

He first gained attention for innovations in banking and startup finance. Today he is known as the mentor of the PayPal mafia of entrepreneurs, as well as for his warnings of a coming technology deficit with severe economic consequences. He works to accelerate innovation to prevent such a crisis by identifying and funding promising technology ideas and by guiding successful companies to scale and dominate their industries.

In 1998, Mr. Thiel made e-commerce easier, faster, and more secure by co-founding and leading PayPal, which now has more than 100 million active financial accounts. In 2002, he sold PayPal to eBay and founded a global macro fund, Clarium.

In 2004, he co-founded Palantir Technologies, which offers platforms for finance companies and intelligence, defense, and law enforcement communities to integrate, visualize, and analyze the world’s information.

In the same year, he made the first outside investment in Facebook, a social networking hub that now has more than 800 million active members. He serves on its board.

Beginning in door-to-door sales, David learned to appreciate two favorite expressions: "nothing ever happens until somebody sells something" and "the key to success is massive failure," i.e., one has to be willing to fail in order to succeed. One sales pitch led to a full-time job at McCaw Cellular, now AT&T.

After being told in 1995 by his then employer Morgan Stanley that email would never be used for business, David jumped at the chance to join Netscape, where he learned from some great leaders and managers. At Netscape he led the Directory and Security division, which offered among the first commercial products supporting Linux and open source. Later David led AOL's Communications, Community, and Instant Messaging product divisions as they surpassed 50M users worldwide. David then joined Tellme Networks as SVP of marketing and business development. Using a quantitative framework called Rifle, the company grew revenue beyond $100M and to profitability. Microsoft subsequently acquired Tellme.

David's investment focus includes Internet software, digital media, and services and communications. A number of David's investments have been significant acquisitions or had IPOs including Bitfone (HPQ), Good Technology (MOT), Ingenio (T),LogMeIn(LOGM), Opsware (HPQ), Slide (GOOG), and Tellme (MSFT). He has been recognized by Fortune and Forbes as one of the top investors under 40.

From Ben's Blog: My name is Ben Horowitz, and I am cofounder and General Partner (along with Marc Andreessen) of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz based in Menlo Park.

Prior to Andreessen Horowitz, Marc and I co-founded Loudcloud, a managed services provider (today, we’d call it a cloud service provider, but people were not quite ready for that in the early 2000s) which became Opsware, an data center automation software provider. I tell the dramatic story of how Loudcloud became Opsware and was ultimately acquired by HP in my blog post titled The Case for the Fat Startup. You can learn more about what I did prior to co-founding Loudcloud by reading my biography on Wikipedia.

In 1992, while he was a student at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Josh co-founded Infonautics Corporation – an Internet information company. In 1996, Infonautics went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
Josh founded Half.com in July of 1999, and led it to become one of the largest sellers of used books, movies and music in the world. Half.com was acquired by eBay in July 2000 -- and Josh remained with eBay for three years, running the Half.com business unit and growing eBay’s Media marketplace to almost half a billion dollars in annual gross merchandise sales.

Vinod grew up dreaming of being an entrepreneur, despite growing up in an Indian Army household with no business or technology connections. Since the age of 16, when he first heard about Intel starting up, he dreamt of starting his own technology company.

Upon graduating with a bachelor's in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Vinod failed, at age 20, to start a soy milk company to service the many people in India who did not have refrigerators. He came instead to the U.S. and got his master's in biomedical engineering at Carnegie-Mellon University. His start-up dreams attracted him to Silicon Valley, where he got an MBA at Stanford University in 1980.

Upon graduation he was one of the three founders of Daisy Systems, which was the first significant computer-aided design system for electrical engineers. The company went on to achieve significant revenue, profits, and an IPO, but Khosla, driven by the frustration of having to design the computer hardware on which the Daisy software needed to be built, started the standards-based Sun Microsystems in 1982 to build workstations for software developers. At Sun he pioneered "open systems" and RISC processors. Sun was funded by longtime friend and board member John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

In 1986 Vinod switched sides and joined Kleiner Perkins, where he was and continues to be a general partner of KPCB funds through KP X. Through the years there, with other partners, he took on Intel's monopoly with Nexgen/AMD (the only microprocessor to have significant success against Intel, sold to AMD for 28 percent of AMD), incubated the idea and business plan for Juniper to take on Cisco's dominance of the router market, formulated the very early advertising-based search strategy for Excite, and transformed the moribund telecommunications business and its archaic SONET implementations with Cerent (sold to Cisco for $7B). He helped in creating value, having fun, succeeding, failing (remember Dynabook?), and driving impact in partnership with entrepreneurs and the partners at KPCB.

In 2004, Vinod, driven by the need for flexibility to accommodate four teenaged children and a desire to be more experimental, to fund sometimes imprudent "science experiments," and to take on both for-profit and for "social impact" ventures, formed khoslaventures, funded entirely with family funds. His goals remain the same: work and learn from fun and knowledgeable entrepreneurs, build impactful companies through the leverage of innovation, and spend time in a partnership that makes a difference. Vinod has a passion for nascent technologies that can have a beneficial effect and economic impact on society. His greatest passion is being a mentor to entrepreneurs, helping them build technology-based businesses. Twilio is based in Silicon Valley with technology allowing developers to build telephony and messaging into their applications.

The Twilio Fund is a micro-fund that was started by 500 Startups and SV Angel in

Patricof founded Apax Partners (based on a play on Patricof's name: Alan Patricof Associates Cross (x) Border), which is today one of the largest private equity firms globally.

Career

Over the course of his 40-year career in private equity, Patricoff has been instrumental in growing the venture capital field from a base of high net-worth individuals to its position today with broad institutional backing, as well as playing a key role in the essential legislative initiatives that have guided its evolution.
Patricof was an early investor in venture capital and has been involved in the development of numerous major companies including America Online, Office Depot, Cadence Design Systems, Apple Computer and FORE Systems. He was a founder and chairman of the board of New York magazine, which later acquired the Village Voice and New West magazine.[1] Patricof also acquired style magazine Details (magazine) in 1987.[2] He has also been involved with Cellular Communications, Inc., NTL, and Audible.

Fenwick & West LLP, one of the nation's premier law firms providing comprehensive legal services to high technology and life science clients, today announced the results of its First Quarter 2011 Silicon Valley Venture Capital Survey.

The First Quarter 2011 survey analyzed the valuations and terms of venture financings for 122 technology and life science companies headquartered in the Silicon Valley that reported raising capital in the first quarter of 2011.

"During the first quarter of 2011, up rounds exceeded down rounds 67% to 16% with 17% flat. This was similar to the fourth quarter of 2010, when up rounds exceeded down rounds 67% to 21%, with 17% flat, and the seventh consecutive quarter in which up rounds exceeded down rounds," said Barry Kramer, partner in the Corporate Group of Fenwick & West and co-author of the survey.

An up round is one in which the price per share at which a company sells its stock has increased since its prior financing round. Conversely, a down round is one in which the price per share has declined since a company's prior financing round.

The Fenwick & West Venture Capital Barometer™ – which measures the change in share price of Silicon Valley companies funded during the quarter compared with the share price of their previous financing round – showed a 52% average price increase for the quarter, less than the 61% reported in the fourth quarter of 2010, but still very healthy.

"This was also the seventh consecutive quarter in which the Venture Capital Barometer was positive," said Kramer.

"The best performing industries in the quarter from a valuation perspective were software (including a significant number of 'software as a service' companies and companies building applications for mobile devices) and Internet/Digital Media, followed by hardware and cleantech, while the life science industry continued to lag," added Michael Patrick, partner in the Corporate Group of Fenwick & West and co-author of the survey.

"As reported by third party sources, the first quarter saw a significant increase in commitments to venture capital funds, reversing the trend that began in early 2009 of venture capitalists investing significantly more in companies than the amount of new funds committed to such venture funds. With an improving venture environment there are reasons to believe this trend will continue," added Patrick.

NEW YORK, June 2, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The estimated market value of venture capital-financed companies in the U.S. rose 19% in 2010's fourth quarter and 23% for 2010, according to the Dow Jones U.S. Venture Capital Index. The index's performance topped the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index's gains of 12% and 17%, respectively, over the same time periods.

The rise in the Dow Jones U.S. Venture Capital Index for 2010 (based on back-testing) marks the second consecutive year in which valuations of, and the amounts invested in, venture capital-financed companies posted gains over to previous years.

Venture capitalists invested $28.5 billion in 2,874 deals in 2010, an increase of 17% in dollars and 8% in deals compared with 2009, according to Dow Jones VentureSource. For 2010's fourth quarter, investments totaled $9.0 billion in 785 deals, a 20% increase in dollars and no change in deals from the fourth quarter of 2009 when $7.2 billion went into 785 deals, according to Dow Jones VentureSource.

"Anyone who thinks the rise in valuations of venture capital-funded companies in 2010's fourth quarter was dominated by a handful of companies would be mistaken," said Susan Woodward, an economist and the founder of Sand Hill Econometrics. "There were 785 private rounds of funding in the fourth quarter with an average amount of $11.5 million raised, well above the third quarter's $9.0 million. These latest figures validate the notion that valuations of venture capital- funded companies for 2010's fourth quarter were up significantly."

The Dow Jones U.S. Venture Capital Index was launched on September 30, 2010 by Dow Jones Indexes, a leading global provider of indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The methodology for the Dow Jones U.S. Venture Capital Index was developed by Sand Hill Econometrics together with Dow Jones Indexes. The values are based on a combination of values reported by the individual venture capital-funded companies to Dow Jones VentureSource and value estimates.

Sand Hill previously developed econometric methods for estimating company values when a recent market value is not readily available. Dow Jones VentureSource database is owned by Dow Jones & Company, Inc.

The Dow Jones U.S. Venture Capital Index is based on U.S. domiciled companies in the Dow Jones VentureSource database, the world's most comprehensive venture capital database. VentureSource tracks more than 19,000 investment firms and approximately 27,000 venture-backed companies -- in all industries and stages of development.

The index tracks the value of companies headquartered in the U.S. that have received equity funding from institutional venture capital funds. Values are reported by the companies themselves. Excluded from the index are companies that receive funding solely from "angels," affluent private investors, or leveraged buyout funds. Component companies enter the index when they get a first round of venture funding. They exit the index when they are acquired, merge with another company, make an IPO or go out of business. The index is market-value weighted, continuously invested, and updated quarterly.

As of December 31, 2010, there were about 8,000 active companies in the Dow Jones U.S. Venture Capital Index. The Index, first published on March 31, 2010, has an annualized return of 16.4% from the end of 1991 through the present, before expenses and fees. Back-tested monthly index history is available back to December 31, 1991.

The Dow Jones U.S. Venture Capital Index is calculated in U.S. dollars and published quarterly, because funding events are usually reported at the end of calendar quarters, on a one-quarter delayed basis. Index values for intervening months also will be published quarterly.
