Thousands of Words and Now Pictures, Too - New York Times

"Until recently, bloggers have been heard but rarely seen. But now two popular Web sites are considering moving into video.
Gawker.com, the running commentary on New York media published by Gawker Media, recently announced plans to develop and publish original video content.
In a Jan. 19 posting, the Web site solicited participants for its Guerrilla Video Project, suggesting videos documenting Manhattan power lunches and book parties as the kind of 'minidocumentaries on crack' it was looking to feature.
Another site on the same path is PostSecret, which encourages people to publish their secrets anonymously online at postsecret.blogspot.com. The blog gained prominence last summer when the band All-American Rejects used images from the Web site in its video for the song 'Dirty Little Secret.'
In December, Regan Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, published 'PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives,' a compilation whose release coincided with a Washington exhibit of the anonymous postcards received by the blog. The book was ranked No. 41 in sales on Amazon.com at midday yesterday."

EETimes.com - VC support lacking for WiMax, says report

"Venture capital support for WiMax startups, despite reaching $170 million, has been underwhelming compared with the support that was given to the IEEE.802.11 wireless LAN, according to a Light Reading report that cites an Unstrung Insider report.
The report argued that seven startup 802.16 chipset developers had, by January 2006, raised $170 million. It also argues that chipsets for fixed WiMax (802.16-2004) and for mobile WiMax (802.16e) require different designs and has effectively forced startups to choose which market they wish to participate in and has diluted the $170 million aggregate investment.
The report argues that the relatively low venture capital investment in surprising. However, the report does not consider the argument that many venture capital firms lost firms backing wireless LAN startups that failed to get to market in time and that generally only a few pioneers succeed with such standards-based deployment cycles.
Instead the report argues that North American venture capitalists consider WiMax to be a big company play against which startups may struggle. "

Amr Awadallah BlogBlog Archive Google will miss 2005-Q4 quarter revenue estimates.

"That said, there is many other reasons to sell GOOG, for example:
1. YPN will be hitting the Adsense program hard in 2006 once its out of beta. The adsense program is indeed starting to slow already, the google network revenue grew by 7% sequentially in Q3-2005 as opposed to 20% for google site.
2. Google is going nuts with capital spending (it spent almost twice what Yahoo spent)
3. Google is also hiring like nuts, 800+ people in Q3, on top of 700+ people in Q2 (i.e. a 1/3 of Googles work force joined in these two quarter). There is two downsides to this: (a) they are hiring lower quality folks (we interview same folks and see who they pick), (ii) they are hiring like yahoo was in 1999/2000, i.e. hiring today expecting that more revenue will come later, that is not always true (as yahoo learned the hard way and laid off a ton of folks in period 2001-2003).
4. Google has been growing the cost of revenues much faster than revenue, in fact their operating margin fell from 35.2% in Q1 of 2005 to 33.5% in Q3"

He predicted ITAs approach would help airlines save money, allow travel agencies to offer higher-value packages to customers, and usher in the era of worldwide self-service."

Text for free with ad-supported i-Text service - Engadget

"If you send a lot of text messages and aren't on a cellphone plan that lets you get away with it without breaking the bank, you may want to give i-Text a try. The free service works with any Java-enabled GSM/GPRS phone, and serves up an ad every time you send a text message. Of course, you're still going to have to pay for GPRS usage, as well as for text messages you receive, so you'll have to do the math to see whether using this service (and paying for the bandwidth to download the ads) is a better deal on your plan than just paying your provider for SMS."

Or take Page's much-anticipated announcement on Google Video. While the project itself was announced early last year, Google's pricing plan is enticingly disruptive: When a content provider, say CBS or the National Basketball Association, retails its programming through Google, it not only names its own price, it gets to keep 70% of the revenue. Not only are independent producers going to find that 70% very attractive, but cable companies, say, are going to find it very tough to compete with those prices. "

WSJ.com - Tech Stocks Seem Set for Comeback

"Technology companies, once the star performers in the IPO market, are expected to receive a wider audience in 2006 after years of struggling to win back investors.
The queue of technology companies that have registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission for IPOs in 2006 is hovering at about a dozen deals, but investment bankers believe the backlog doesn't reflect the growing number of discussions going on between companies and Wall Street. They say it's likely that technology-stock deals will pick up beginning around the second half, as companies get a few more successful quarters under their belts, and exceed the number of deals in 2005, which totaled 30, according to IPO research firm Renaissance Capital in Greenwich, Conn.
'In 2005, because the markets were difficult, I think a lot of people looked at the market and said, 'Maybe we should wait until 2006, when we might be able to get a better valuation based on our future earnings,' ' says Andy Fisher, head of technology equity capital markets at Goldman Sachs Group Inc."

WSJ.com - Poor Start to '06 For Dollar Signals Tough Year Ahead

"It hasn't been a very happy new year for the dollar.
After a surprisingly strong performance in 2005, when the U.S. currency rose 15% against the euro and the yen, the dollar has stumbled out of the gate in what some worry may be an ominous sign for 2006.
In the first two trading days after last Monday's holiday in the U.S., the dollar suffered its largest two-day decline against the euro in five years as it tumbled 2.5%. While the stock market shrugged off weaker-than-expected employment numbers released Friday, the dollar didn't. The currency fell again on heightened fears of an economic slowdown, and that raised the possibility that last year's dollar rally may be petering out."
